Local SEO in India — Ranking in the Map Pack

Short answer

Google ranks the local pack on three factors: proximity to the searcher, relevance of your profile to the query, and prominence across the web. Proximity cannot be changed, so local SEO works on the other two: a complete and correctly categorised Google Business Profile, consistent business information across the web, steady genuine reviews, and location pages with real local content.

The three ranking factors

Google states them plainly: relevance, distance and prominence. Relevance is how well your profile matches what was searched. Distance is how far you are from the searcher or the location they specified. Prominence is how well known and well referenced your business is.

The crucial implication is that there is no single ranking. The pack is recalculated for each searcher's position, so you rank differently on every street. A business that ranks first at its own address and vanishes three kilometres away is behaving normally, not failing.

Google Business Profile: what actually matters

Completeness is itself a ranking input, and most profiles are half filled. Work through every field.

  • Primary category chosen precisely. This is one of the strongest relevance signals, and a wrong primary category caps everything else
  • Secondary categories for genuine additional services, not aspirational ones
  • Services and products listed individually with descriptions
  • Business description written for humans, mentioning what you do and where
  • Accurate hours including holiday hours, which affect both ranking and trust
  • Real photographs added regularly rather than a one-time upload
  • Q&A section seeded with the questions customers actually ask

NAP consistency and citations

Name, address and phone number should be byte-identical everywhere they appear. Your website, Google, Justdial, IndiaMART, Sulekha, Facebook, industry directories. What damages rankings is contradiction, not absence.

In India the common problem is legacy listings: an old office address, a landline that no longer works, a slightly different spelling of the business name. Cleaning up conflicts is worth considerably more than adding new directory entries.

Reviews

Volume, recency, rating and content all contribute. A steady stream matters more than a large one-time burst, which looks manipulated and can trigger filtering.

Reviews mentioning the service and the area are more useful than a bare five stars, because the text itself contributes relevance. Ask at the moment of satisfaction, make the link one tap, and respond to every review including the negative ones: responses are visible to future customers and signal an active business.

Location pages that are not doorway pages

If you serve multiple areas, each needs a page with genuinely distinct content: real local information, area-specific services, local context, and ideally something that could only have been written about that place.

The failure mode is obvious and common: the same paragraph with the city name substituted, repeated forty times. Google recognises this pattern, treats it as a doorway network, and it can harm the whole site rather than just failing to help.

Measuring properly

A single ranking figure is meaningless for local search. Use a ranking grid, which checks your position from many points across a geographic area and shows a map of where you win and lose.

That view changes decisions. It shows whether you are competitive across the catchment or only near your own pin, and it makes progress measurable in a way that an average position never can.

Can we rank in a city where we have no address?

Not in the map pack. That requires a real, verifiable location, and virtual offices routinely get profiles suspended. You can rank in organic results for that city with a genuinely useful page, and you can define a service area on your profile if you travel to customers.

How many reviews do we need?

There is no threshold. What matters is being competitive with whoever currently holds the pack for your query and area, and maintaining a steady flow. Twenty reviews across a year outperform fifty in one week.

Do Indian directories like Justdial still matter?

For citation consistency, yes: a contradictory listing on a widely referenced directory is a genuine negative. As a source of traffic they matter less than they did, but as a consistency signal they are still worth getting right.

Why do we rank well at our office but not nearby?

Proximity. The pack is recalculated for every searcher's location, so falling away with distance is normal. Extending your effective radius comes from improving relevance and prominence, since distance itself is fixed.
