Performance Marketing vs Digital Marketing

Short answer

Digital marketing is the whole category of marketing done through digital channels, including SEO, content, email, organic social and paid advertising. Performance marketing is the subset in which spend is tied to a specific measurable outcome and optimised continuously against cost per result. Every performance marketing activity is digital marketing; most digital marketing activity is not performance marketing.

What each term covers

Digital marketing is a channel definition. If it happens through a digital medium, it qualifies: a blog post, an email newsletter, an Instagram account, a display banner, a search ad, a WhatsApp broadcast.

Performance marketing is a measurement definition. It describes activity where a target outcome is defined in advance, results are attributed to spend, and budget moves toward whatever produces the outcome most cheaply. The channel is incidental: the accountability is the point.

Where the two overlap and where they do not

Paid search and paid social are almost always performance marketing, because the measurement infrastructure exists by default. SEO and content can be run as performance channels when the attribution is set up to connect a landing page to revenue, but most organisations do not do that and run them as brand or traffic activities instead.

Brand campaigns, sponsorships and awareness advertising are digital marketing but not performance marketing, because the intended effect is diffuse and delayed. That does not make them worthless. It makes them a different kind of investment with a different kind of justification.

How they are measured

Digital marketing at large is commonly reported on reach, sessions, followers, impressions and engagement rate. Performance marketing reports on cost per acquisition, ROAS, CAC, LTV and contribution margin.

This difference matters more than it sounds. Teams that report on traffic will optimise for traffic, and will produce a great deal of it without moving revenue. Choosing the metric is choosing the behaviour.

Which one does a business need first?

If you need revenue this quarter and there is demand for your product, performance marketing first. It is the only channel that can be turned on and produce measurable results in weeks.

If acquisition costs are already high and rising, the broader digital marketing programme (SEO, content, email, retention) is what reduces dependence on paid over time. In practice most established businesses need both, with paid funding the present and organic lowering the future cost base.

Related questions

Is SEO performance marketing?

It can be run as one, if landing pages are attributed through to revenue and content investment is judged on cost per acquired customer. Most organisations do not measure it that way and treat it as a traffic channel, which makes it digital marketing but not performance marketing.

Which is cheaper?

Performance marketing costs more per acquisition over time but delivers immediately. Organic channels cost more up front in time and produce nothing for months, then become far cheaper per acquisition. The cheapest overall position is usually a business that built organic while paid was funding growth.

Can a small business do both?

Yes, but usually in sequence rather than simultaneously. Start with whichever solves the immediate constraint (revenue now means paid, unsustainable acquisition costs means organic) and add the other once the first is stable.

Do performance marketing agencies handle SEO?

Some do, some do not. It is a genuinely different discipline with different skills. What matters is whether the agency can explain how the two interact in your specific case, rather than whether they list both on a services page.
