How to Rank Higher on Your Google Business Profile

Short answer

The levers you genuinely control are the primary category, how precisely your services and description match the words people search, a verified listing in good standing, and a steady flow of recent customer activity such as reviews, photographs, calls and messages. Everything else, above all how close you happen to be to the person searching, is fixed. A category correction can show an effect within four to eight weeks, while building enough prominence to win a competitive area takes months, and cosmetic edits rarely move anything at all.

What you control, and what you do not

It is worth separating the two lists before spending any effort. You control the primary and secondary categories, the services and products listed, the description, the hours, the photographs, the Q and A section, how quickly you answer messages, and whether customers keep leaving reviews. You do not control where the searcher is standing, how many competitors sit between you and them, or how the results are laid out on any given day.

Almost every disappointed conversation about map positions comes from effort spent on the second list. A business three kilometres outside the commercial centre of its city cannot buy its way into the pack for searches made in that centre. What it can do is win everything within its own radius and take a larger share of the searches where it genuinely is the nearest good option.

The category field decides more than the rest combined

The primary category is the strongest statement your profile makes about what you are. Choose it too broadly and you compete against businesses that do far more than you do; choose it wrongly and no volume of review generation compensates. If you are unsure, look at which category the three businesses currently holding the pack have chosen, because that is Google telling you what it considers relevant for the query.

Secondary categories should describe services you actually provide and could evidence to an inspector. Stacking every loosely related category in the hope of appearing for more searches dilutes the primary signal and in some sectors invites a review of the listing. Google adds, renames and retires categories regularly, so re-check the available list once or twice a year rather than assuming yours is still the closest fit.

  • One primary category, chosen as narrowly as is still accurate
  • Secondary categories only for services you genuinely deliver
  • Services and products listed individually, in the words customers use
  • Re-check the category list annually, since Google revises it

Verification and suspension: the failure that stops everything else

An unverified or suspended listing does not appear, and no amount of optimisation proceeds in parallel with that problem. Verification methods have shifted repeatedly and now frequently involve a video showing your signage, your equipment and your access to the premises, so treat the exact process as something to check at the time rather than something to memorise from an article.

Suspensions in India cluster around a small set of causes: an address that is a coworking desk or a virtual office, a business name padded with service and city keywords, a category that does not match what the premises evidently does, and several edits to the name or address within a short window. Reinstatement is possible but slow, and it goes better when you already hold dated photographs, signage, a lease or utility bill, and registration documents matching the listed name.

  • Use the name on your signage, not that name with a service and city appended
  • Avoid a virtual office address for a listing you cannot evidence in person
  • Make major edits one at a time rather than in a single sweep
  • Keep proof of occupancy filed before you need it

Activity: what a maintained profile looks like

A profile untouched for two years reads as dormant. Adding photographs regularly, keeping hours accurate including festival closures, answering messages promptly if messaging is switched on, and seeding the questions section with what your staff answer on the phone all contribute to a listing that looks alive and currently trading rather than one somebody set up, photographed once and then abandoned to whatever Google decides to show.

Updates, offers and posts are worth publishing for the customers who see them, though the direct effect on position is modest and the formats available change often. Treat them as merchandising rather than as a ranking tactic, and do not let a weekly posting routine become a substitute for the category and review work that actually shifts position over a quarter or two.

Reviews without getting them removed

Reviews contribute, and the ways businesses generate them are frequently against the rules. Offering a discount or a free item in exchange, asking only the pleased customers while quietly routing unhappy ones elsewhere, and buying reviews in bulk are all prohibited, and enforcement usually arrives as a silent removal of the reviews, or of the listing, rather than as a warning you have any chance to respond to.

What works is unglamorous. Ask at the moment the customer is pleased, hand them a short link or a QR code, and make it a routine part of the job rather than a quarterly campaign. Replying to every review, especially the critical ones, is visible to everybody who reads the profile afterwards and is often worth more than the star average. A sudden burst after a long silence is the pattern most likely to be filtered.

Competitor spam and the redressal route

In most Indian cities the pack contains at least one listing with a keyword-stuffed name, a residential address for a business with no premises, or a category chosen to intercept a query it has no claim on. This is not a reason to copy the approach. Enforcement is uneven but it is not absent, and a suspension costs far more than the borrowed position was ever worth.

The legitimate response is to suggest an edit on the listing and, where that achieves nothing, to file a complaint through the business redressal process with evidence attached. Outcomes are inconsistent and slow, so treat it as occasional maintenance rather than as strategy. Time spent on your own categories and review flow almost always returns more than time spent reporting other people.

Timelines, and how to tell whether anything changed

A category change or a resolved verification can show up within four to eight weeks. Prominence, which is the slow accumulation of reviews, mentions and links pointing at a recognised business, moves over months rather than weeks. A profile claimed after years of neglect usually improves visibly during the first two months and then slows to something much less dramatic.

Judge it with a grid of sample points spread across your catchment rather than a single position, and re-run that grid quarterly from the same points. A one-off check performed from your own office tells you only that you appear at your own address, which nearly every verified business manages regardless of how carefully the profile has been set up or how long it has been neglected.

Can we add our service and city to the business name?

No. The name field is meant to match the name you trade under in the real world, on signage and on documents. Keyword-stuffed names sometimes rank until they are reported or reviewed, and the correction often arrives as a suspension rather than a quiet edit. Put that phrase in the services, the description and the review text instead, where it belongs.

We deliver to customers and have no shopfront. What should we do?

Set the listing up as a service-area business, hide the street address and define the areas you cover. It then competes on relevance and prominence from a hidden pin, which usually means a narrower effective radius than a comparable business with premises. Publishing a home address for a business with no visible premises is the most frequent cause of suspension in this situation.

Why did our position drop after we updated the profile?

Edits put a listing back into review, and simultaneous changes to name, address and category can cause a temporary drop or a pending state while that resolves. If the information was genuinely wrong, the dip is worth it. If nothing was wrong, you have just discovered why experienced operators change one field at a time and then wait a fortnight.

Does posting weekly updates improve ranking?

Not directly to any degree worth building a routine around. Posts help the people already looking at your profile, which is a real benefit worth having, but the effect on position is small next to category accuracy, review flow and simple proximity. Post when there is something genuine to say rather than to satisfy a content schedule.

Can one business have two profiles at the same address?

Only if they are genuinely separate businesses with distinct names, separate staff and separate suites or entrances, which is uncommon. Duplicate listings for one business compete with each other, split the reviews between them and often end with both suspended. Where duplicates already exist, request a merge rather than quietly maintaining both and hoping.
