Google Shopping for German Retailers
A German Shopping feed competes with the marketplaces and with the price comparison sites at the same time, and what decides all three is the completeness of your product data.

German retail is strict about product identifiers, and a feed missing EANs gets matched badly, shown rarely and compared unfavourably whenever it does appear. Beyond identifiers, the attributes carrying weight here are the ones a German buyer filters on: exact size and fit data, material, the energy label where it applies, shipping cost, and a delivery window stated as a date range rather than estimated vaguely. We work through Merchant Center diagnostics and clear the disapproval backlog before touching a bid, because an unlisted product cannot be optimised.
The second German specific is that Shopping is not the only comparison surface. Idealo and its equivalents intercept a large share of considered purchases, they draw on a feed much like Google's, and they compete for the same budget line while rarely appearing in the same report. We put them in one view. And because return rates in fashion and footwear can reach a third of orders, product-level bidding is weighted by margin after returns, or the account scales precisely the products that lose money.

Identifier completeness first
Missing EANs cost matching, visibility and comparison quality at once. Clearing the identifier and disapproval backlog usually moves revenue more than any bidding change available in the account.
Delivery time as a feed field
German buyers filter and decide on stated delivery windows. A vague estimate loses the comparison even when the price wins, and the field belongs in the feed rather than only on the page.
Comparison sites in the same report
Idealo and its peers take a real share of considered purchases from a similar feed. They compete with Shopping for budget and deserve to be measured next to it rather than separately.
Bidding weighted by margin after returns
With fashion returns reaching a third of orders, revenue-weighted bidding funds the wrong products. Once return data exists at product level, the bids follow contribution instead of turnover.
What Germany clients usually arrive with
- A catalogue with a quarter of its products disapproved and nobody watching
- A fashion retailer whose best sellers are also its least profitable lines
- A shop running Performance Max with no product-level visibility at all
- A retailer weighing the marketplaces against its own webshop
The complete picture
This page covers what is specific to Germany. Scope, process, deliverables and pricing are on the main google shopping service page, and how a remote engagement with an India-based team works — hours, account ownership, invoicing — is on the Germany page.
Google Shopping for German Retailers: frequently asked
Why does the feed matter more than the bids?
Because Google matches a query against your product data before you enter an auction at all. A truncated or badly ordered German title, a missing identifier or a wrong product category means the auction happens without you in it. Bidding only changes what you pay once you already qualify, which is why feed work routinely produces a larger change than months of bid tuning.
Should we be on Idealo as well as Google Shopping?
In most German consumer categories it is worth testing, because a large share of considered purchases passes through a comparison site and your competitors are already listed there. The feed work overlaps heavily with Merchant Center, so the marginal effort is small. Judge it on contribution after returns like any other channel, inside the same table as Shopping.
How do you handle high return rates in bidding?
By getting return data at product level out of the store and using contribution after returns, shipping and payment fees as the value the bidding optimises toward. Until that exists, revenue-weighted bidding quietly funds the products customers send back. It takes some weeks of order history before those numbers are stable enough to bid on with any confidence.
Who writes the German product titles?
A native German writer, working to a structure we define. Title order affects matching, so we specify the pattern, brand, product type, key attribute and size, and the writer produces natural German inside it. Machine-translated titles are recognisable on sight and they lose the compound terms that German buyers actually search for, which is where the volume sits.
